Director of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology at Hannover Medical School (MHH), since 2020 (returning to MHH). Studied medicine 1988–1996 at the University of Göttingen, habilitated in 2004 at MHH on the immunopathogenesis of hepatitis C infection, adjunct professorship in 2009. Professor of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology at the University of Duisburg-Essen 2018–2020. Research focus: infectious liver diseases, particularly the various forms of hepatitis; co-editor of the journals Hepatology and Gastroenterology. Elected president of the German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) for a two-year term in 2023.
