Prof. Dr. Patrick Michl is W3 professor and medical director of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Infectious Diseases and Intoxications (Internal Medicine IV) at Heidelberg University Hospital. He studied medicine at Ludwig Maximilian University Munich (1991-1999) with clinical rotations at UCLA and Harvard Medical School, completed his specialist training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at the University of Ulm (2000-2006), and gained further qualifications in infectious diseases and oncological pharmacotherapy in Marburg (2006-2010), where he served as senior consultant until 2015. From 2015 to 2022 he headed internal medicine as W3 professor at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, and gastroenterology in Heidelberg since 2022. His research focuses on pancreatic diseases, particularly surveillance programs for familial pancreatic cancer; he received the United European Gastroenterology "Rising Star" award (2009) and the Ludwig Heilmeyer Prize (2008), and serves on the board of the European Pancreas Club.
