The Department of Internal Medicine I at University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), Kiel Campus, is one of the largest university centers for gastroenterology and hepatology in Germany. Led by Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h. c. Stefan Schreiber (Gastroenterology/Hepatology) and Prof. Dr. med. Jan Heyckendorf (Pulmonology/Infectious Diseases), the department treats the full spectrum of acute and chronic liver diseases as well as disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and bile ducts. Further focus areas include internal intensive care medicine, endocrinology, infectious diseases, rheumatology, and nutritional and geriatric medicine. The department operates a certified liver center with close ties to liver transplant surgery.
